Marrs, Larry
Biography
Marrs graduated from Concord University with a degree in Communications with an emphasis in Broadcast Journalism in 2003. After graduation, he took a position at WVFX in Clarksburg, West Virginia as a creative services assistant and later became the creative services director.
In 2006, Marrs left broadcasting for seven years while running his own video production business, but in 2013 returned to broadcasting as a master control operator at WVNS in Ghent.
Marrs knew he didn’t want to be in master control, he wanted to be shooting, either news or in creative services. A chance encounter one night with an accident knocking out power to half of Bluefield changed his career path. Using his skills as a videographer he was able to record footage of the accident causing the power outage. This earned him more opportunities to shoot for the news department, eventually earning him a full-time job as a news photographer.
In 2015 he was awarded Best News Photographer by the West Virginia Broadcasters Association, an award he would win a total of four times in his decade long career with WVNS. He has won three other awards from the WVBA and has received eight awards from the Virginias Associated Press Broadcasters including three Best Feature Photography awards. He is also a member of The Ohio Valley Region of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, where he has received two Emmy nominations from the Ohio Valley Chapter.
2023 brought change to his career as Larry became an Instructor of Multimedia Studies at his Alma Mater, Concord University. Larry not only uses his talent in video to teach students, but helps various organizations on campus with video projects.
