CONCORD RECENTLY PARTNERED WITH LOCAL SPONSORS TO PROVIDE DICTIONARIES TO MERCER COUNTY THIRD GRADERS
ATHENS, WV – Each year, Concord University partners with local sponsors including Bluefield Rotary Club, Princeton Rotary Club, and New River Community and Technical College (NRCTC), to participate in the Dictionary Project, which provides dictionaries to all third-grade students in Mercer County. Athens Elementary served as the celebration site this year, where students attended an assembly and heard an address by Dr. Kendra Boggess, Concord University’s President, as well as Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Ernie Adkins, and Dr. Deb HalseyHunter from the Princeton Rotary. Rush Jordan from NRCTC was also present to speak with the students. This year, the event took place on Friday, October 11.
Dr. Boggess says of the project, “I’m very happy to participate in an event that puts a spotlight on the importance of education and supports our younger generation in their formative years. This certainly fits within standards of excellence we strive for at Concord University.”
Based in Charleston, SC, the vision of the Dictionary Project is to provide a dictionary to every student in the United States, with the help of local sponsors and volunteers. The goal is to help students improve their communication skills and make the most of their education. Many sponsors also take the Dictionary Project beyond the United States to help improve literacy worldwide.
