CONCORD UNIVERSITY SOCIAL WORK AND EDUCATION DEPARTMENT TO HOST IN-SERVICE TRAINING EVENT FOR FOSTER FAMILIES

ATHENS, WV – Concord University Social Work, a leading training program for foster families and child welfare in the state, is proud to announce a specialized training event aimed at equipping foster, adoptive, and kinship families with essential skills and knowledge. The event will take place on June 27-29 from 12-3 PM at the Concord University Marsh Library. The training is free and open to all current and past foster, adoptive, and kinship families. While parents receive training, certified teachers from Mercer County will work with the children on literacy skills under the direction of Dr. Kathy Hawks, Professor of Education and Coordinator of Clinical Experiences.

Dr. Hawks has been a member of the Concord faculty since 2000. She teaches in the elementary program at the undergraduate level and the reading specialist program at the graduate level. Before her time at Concord, she taught in the public school for 21 years, including second, third, and fifth grades, and served as a reading specialist.

Participating families will receive in-service training hours, children will receive a copy of the books used in literacy lessons, and refreshments will be provided. Children should have completed pre-school before attending.

For more information about the event or to register, please contact Dr. Samantha Byrd at sbyrd@concord.edu or 304-384-5353.
