SHYSPEAKS, HIP HOP AND SPOKEN WORD ARTIST TO PRESENT “HIDDEN HEROES” AT CONCORD UNIVERSITY
ATHENS, W.Va. – ShySpeaks, an American hip hop and spoken word artist, will present through conversation, video storytelling and performance, “Hidden Heroes” at Concord University on Monday, February 12 at 7 PM in the Jean & Jerry Beasley Student Center ballroom. The performance will include spoken-word, music, and speaking on unsung African American heroes. There will also be an open-mic portion, giving students some short questions to reflect on during the presentation. Participants will be selected to share stories, or any hidden talent they have that echoes the theme of the event.
By showcasing Black history through art, ShySpeaks emphasizes the importance of art as a political tool, as it has been throughout history with figures like Langston Hughes, Lena Horne, and Paul Robeson. “I am beyond excited to bring “Hidden Heroes” to Concord University,” says ShySpeaks. “This experience is not just about celebrating the past, but also about recognizing the present and inspiring the future. Through art and storytelling, we aim to honor the unsung heroes of African American history and empower the next generation to continue making history.”
Carolyn Worley, Concord’s Director of Student Activities & Student Center says, “I was looking for a speaker who was different and addresses lesser-known contributors to African American history, in recognition of Black History Month. I am hoping Shy’s positive message will bring more students to the event. Her presentation also invites students to get involved by sharing their stories and talents.”
If you have questions about attending and/or participating in this event, please contact Carolyn Worley at cworley@concord.edu or 304-384-5310.
