CONCORD ESPORTS: GRAND CHAMPIONS OF THE HUE INVITATIONAL HOSTED BY HARRISBURG UNIVERSITY

ATHENS, WV – Concord Esports brought home a win at the HUE Invitational 2024 hosted by Harrisburg University on September 20-22. The event is a three-day tournament with 12 collegiate teams. The first two days are broken up into pool play where each team must play each other once. From there the top four teams with the best record will move to Championship Sunday. The four teams that qualified for Sunday were Maryville University, West Virginia University (WVU), Illinois State University (ISU) and Concord University. In the semi-final round, the Concord team reverse swept ISU 3-2, moving them up to the Grand Finals, matched up against WVU. In the Grand Finals, Concord defeated WVU in a best-of-7 series 4-0, becoming the Grand Champions for 2024 and winning a cash prize of $2,500.

Austin Clay, Director of Concord’s Esports program, says of the accomplishment, “I am incredibly proud of the Rocket League team that Jonathan built, securing 1st place against WVU, the No. 2 team overall, last year. Winning that match meant so much to our program and the university. Along the way, we also faced PSU, Ole Miss, Michigan State, and seven other teams to claim victory at the HUE Invitational. A big thanks to Harrisburg University for hosting and inviting us to such a prestigious event. Finally, I want to express my gratitude to the administration at Concord for their unwavering support of Esports at this high level.”

In 2019, Concord University became the first public university in the state of West Virginia to develop an Esports program. Ever since, Concord Esports has captured 10 national championships, 9 for Call of Duty and 1 for Rocket League. In addition, Concord has been recognized for numerous accomplishments such as being a finalist for the 2024 CECC Program of the Year, Finalists for the 2024 CECC Program Impact Award, and the 2024 ECAC Commissioners Cup recipients.
