History is the study of the past; it shapes the present and sets the course for the future. The study of history can help us to better understand and navigate through the increasing complexity and uncertainty of the modern world in which we live. The skills that Concord University’s History program provides you to do this–the ability to analyze and interpret evidence, think critically, and synthesize trends in data–are greatly valued by employers in many businesses as well.

Our History major prepares students for graduate school in history and closely related disciplines, law school, and a wide variety of careers.

Concord University’s History minor works well with many other majors and careers. After you have completed your General Education requirements you may only need 4 more History classes for a minor!

Concord University’s History Program is EEQ Certified! Quality Assurance Commons grants Essential Employability Qualities Certification (EEQ CERT) after a rigorous review process. EEQ-certified programs foster a distinctive set of attributes in their graduates and completers. These qualities prepare students to navigate and succeed in today’s evolving workforce. The eight Essential Employability Qualities are communication, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity & problem-solving, learning & adaptability, professionalism & responsibility, motivation & initiative, and digital literacy. Programs participating in EEQ CERT are scored on five categories that represent a comprehensive and integrated framework for employability: EEQ Preparation, Employer Engagement, Integrated Career Support Services, Learner Engagement, and Transparency of Outcomes.

  1. Synthesis – Provide history majors with access to historical information in order to analyze important people, societies, trends, and developments across time.
  2. Analysis – Provide history majors with an opportunity to interpret historical evidence to reach accurate and thoughtful conclusions about historical figures, events, and/or trends.
  3. Methodology – Provide history majors with an opportunity to conduct historical research by using primary and secondary sources.
  4. Communication – Provide history majors with an opportunity to communicate historical analysis to their peers and program faculty.
  5. Historical Thinking – Provide history majors with an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills when considering people, events, and trends in historical context.
